About Free Spirit Adventure
Free Spirit Adventure is the story of a grandfather and granddaughter attempting the Appalachian Trail.
Chuck Williams recently started hiking on small trails around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near his home. One day he made a goal for his self, to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. He didn’t want to do the trail alone and even thought about taking his coonhound Copper, but most trails in the GSM National Park don’t allow dogs.
After overhearing her grandpa saying he didn’t have anyone to train with, Addy said she would be happy to go along on training hikes so he wouldn’t have to hike alone. After her first hike, she loved it so much she decided she wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail too.
It takes up to six months to do the whole trail. That means six months out of school. Grandpa and Gran talked about it and agreed that homeschooling, or unschooling, would be the best option to keep her in school and learning while she travels with Grandpa.
Now they are both training to hike 2910 miles, from north Georgia to Maine. Gran will meet them at set locations along the trail to help replenish supplies and update the unschooling (and get footage from the hike for their YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook).
Their biggest obstacle is financing and that’s where this site comes in. Doing a trail of this size not only takes training but also equipment like packs, tent, etc. Instead of asking for straight-up donations, we are asking you to purchase anything from this store to help fund this trip. Anything at all helps.
We understand not everyone will like our products. If you don’t see anything you would like to buy and still want to help, just shoot us an email or message here on the site, and we will direct you to where you can donate.
Thank you for your help! Feel free to follow us on our social media accounts. We have Facebook, Instagram, and a YouTube channel so you can follow us through training and along the AT.
